Lytham Road | A Home with Wow and Warmth

A family home in Whitley Bay transformed from safe and grey into a layered, open-plan space designed for connection, personality and real everyday life.

Lytham Road began as a home that was not working for the family day to day. The kitchen was small, the playroom sat separately from the main living spaces, and the layout made it difficult to stay connected as family life unfolded around them. They wanted more than a house that looked nice. They wanted a home with real wow factor, one that felt warmer, more personal, and far better suited to how they actually lived.

The transformation centred around reimagining a plain square extension as the true heart of the home. Rather than leaving it as one undifferentiated open space, the layout was carefully divided into clearly defined zones for cooking, dining, relaxing, working and gathering. The result is an open-plan family space that feels sociable and connected, while still allowing each area to hold its own purpose and atmosphere.

At the centre sits the kitchen, now the anchor of daily life, linking every part of the open-plan space so family members can cook, talk, work, do homework or entertain without losing connection. Rich texture and contrast run throughout, from the bold kitchen finishes and black and copper Venetian plaster to the softer, more relaxed language of the living area. A concealed door to the snug keeps the main space visually calm, while bespoke shelving and collected details help tell the family’s story.

Beyond the main room, the design continues to solve for real life. The hallway was reshaped to create an immediate sense of arrival, with bespoke storage turning an awkward return into a striking focal point. The snug became a hidden retreat within the home, while the downstairs cloakroom was designed as a colour-drenched, transportive oasis for guests. Upstairs, the son’s room was planned around both focus and downtime, with colour blocking and built-in storage helping to create multiple moods within one cohesive space. Throughout the house, the aim was the same: to create a home that feels welcoming, expressive and deeply personal, while working beautifully for the family who live in it.
