Grosvenor Place | A Family Home That Works Beautifully

A bold, hard-working kitchen-diner in North Shields, designed to bring flow, storage and personality to everyday family life.

Before this transformation, the space was dark, impractical and not working hard enough for family life. There was nowhere easy to put coats, limited everyday storage, and the kitchen lacked the warmth, organisation and ease the family needed. This project had to achieve a great deal within one connected scheme: create a more welcoming kitchen-diner, improve the day-to-day flow through the house, add a downstairs toilet and utility, and make the whole space feel lighter, calmer and more enjoyable to live in.

The solution was to make the room work properly, not just look better. Every area was carefully zoned around real routines and future family life. As you enter, the sequence begins with a concealed utility, followed by a dedicated cloakroom and shoe-storage area, creating an immediate drop zone that helps keep the rest of the room calmer and clearer. From there, the layout moves naturally into a breakfast cupboard and coffee point, then into the main sink and preparation area, before flowing into the cooking zone itself.

Beyond the kitchen, the space opens into a softer area for play and relaxation, allowing family life to unfold without everything happening in one place. On the other side of the island, the dining area gives the room a more social anchor, with a natural route across to the downstairs toilet, the children’s playroom under the stairs, and back through to the stair hall. The result is a space that supports movement, routine and connection while still feeling visually bold, warm and full of personality.

A reading nook by the window adds another layer to the scheme: a place for story time, a quiet glass of wine at sunset, and a stronger connection to the garden. Even the cat’s access to the flap was designed into the bench seating, because in a family home that works beautifully, the smallest details matter too.
